1. Action
I can lay down that history
I can lay down my glasses
I can lay down imaginary lists
of what to forget and what must be
done. I can shake the sun
out of my eyes and lay everything down
on the hot sand, and cross
the whispering threshold and walk
right into the clear sea, and float there,
my long hair floating, and fishes
vanishing all around me. Deep water.
Little by little one comes to know
the limits and depths of power.
Ação
eu posso deixar pra trás aquela história
eu posso deixar pra trás meus óculos
eu posso deixar pra trás listas imaginárias
do que esquecer e do que deve ser
feito. Eu posso sacudir o sol
para fora dos meus olhos e deixar tudo pra trás
na areia quente, e atravessar
o sussurante portal e andar
direto para o claro mar, e lá boiar,
meu longo cabelo boiando, e peixes
desvanecendo à minha volta. Águas profundas.
Pouco a pouco começa-se a entender
os limites e as profundidades da força.
2. The Dead
Earnestly I looked
into their abandoned faces
at the moment of death and while
I bandaged their slack jaws and
straightened waxy unresistant limbs and plugged
the orifices with cotton
but like everyone else I learned
each time nothing new, only that
as it were, a music, however harsh, that held us
however loosely, had stopped, and left
a heavy thick silence in its place.
Os Mortos
Inocentemente eu olhei
3. Witness
Sometimes the mountain
is hidden from me in veils
of cloud, sometimes
I am hidden from the mountain
in veils of inattention, apathy, fatigue
when I forget or refuse to go
down the shore or a few yards
down the road, on a clear day,
to reconfirm
that witnessing presence.
Testemunha
Às vezes a montanha
se esconde de mim sob véus
de nuvens, às vezes
eu me escondo da montanha
sob véus de desatenção, apatia, cansaço
quando eu me esqueço ou me recuso a ir
pela costa, ou poucos metros
pela estrada abaixo, num dia claro,
para reconfirmar
aquela testemunhal presença.
4. Tenebrae
Heavy, heavy, heavy, hand and heart.
We are at war,
bitterly, bitterly at war.
And the buying and selling
buzzes at our heads, a swarm
of busy flies, a kind of innocence.
Gowns of gold sequins are fitted,
sharp-glinting. What harsh rustlings
of silver moiré there are,
to remind me of shrapnel splinters.
And weddings are held in full solemnity
not of desire but of etiquette,
the nuptial pomp of starched lace;
a grim innocence.
And picnic parties return from the beaches
burning with stored sun in the dusk;
children promised a TV show when they get home
fall asleep in the backs of a million station wagons,
sand in the hair, the sound of waves
quietly persistent at their ears.
They are not listening.
Their parents at night
dream and forget their dreams.
They wake in the dark
and make plans. Their sequin plans
glitter into tomorrow.
They buy, they sell.
Tenebrae
Pesados, pesados, pesados mão e coração.
Estamos em guerra,
amargamente, amargamente em guerra.
E a compra e venda,
ruídos em nossas cabeças, um enxame
de moscas agitadas, um tipo de inocência.
Togas de lantejoulas douradas são vestidas,
brilhantes. Que desagradáveis farfalhares
no tecido prateado elas fazem,
para me lembrar de estilhaços de bombas.
E casamentos acontecem com toda a solenidade
não do desejo, mas da etiqueta,
a pompa nupcial das rendas engomadas;
uma amarga inocência.
E as pessoas voltam dos piqueniques nas praias
queimando com o sol acumulado no fim de tarde;
e fazem planos. Seus planos de lantejoulas
brilham rumo ao amanhã.
Eles compram, eles vendem.
5. Of Being
I know this happiness
is provisional:
the looming presences —
great suffering, great fear —
withdraw only
into peripheral vision:
but ineluctable this shimmering
of wind in the blue leaves:
this flood of stillness
widening the lake of sky:
this need to dance,
this need to kneel:
this mystery:
Sobre Ser
Eu sei que esta felicidade
é temporária:
as presenças nebulosas —
grandes sofrimentos, grandes medos —
recolhidos, apenas
para a visão periférica:
mas inelutável é este cintilar
do vento nas folhas azuis:
esta torrente de permanência
expandindo o lago do céu:
e precisar dançar,
e precisar ajoelhar:
este mistério:
